The last evening of Diffusion 2018 presents work by
Ruben Patiño, Kevin Blackistone, Mike Bullock and
a live multichannel piece by Carrie Fucile.
Here’s some information (as it comes in!) about the artists:
Rubén Patiño, Barcelona 1979, is an artist working in the field of electronic music, operating in a hybrid territory that incorporates elements of club culture and contemporary art. Most of Patiño’s work takes form in time based proposals that incorporate sound, light, video, text and diverse materials. Especially interested in distorting the perception of space and involving the audience, his practice tends to challenge standardized formats of presentation and explores the boundaries in between concert, public event and installation. He is part of N.M.O. a “Fluxus techno / military space music ” unit that together with Morten J. Olsen, which operates between repetitive pattern-oriented music, performance and sound spacialisation. Among collaborations with Roc Jiménez de Cisneros, Arnau Sala and Daniele Guerini, Patiño works under the name of Lag OS an ongoing project based on the sonic exploration of an imaginary landscape; a mysterious swamp.

Mike Bullock
In my electroacoustic compositions I combine processed field recordings with my own contrabass playing to create sound worlds that exceed realism, while maintaining the grain of natural processes and human touch. Synthesized sounds flutter with the breath of of a waterfall or the skitter of a tumbling leaf, while the reverberant qualities of real and virtual spaces compete with and compliment each other. Since 2006 I have been working with multichannel spatial audio in my compositional practice, with a recent focus on higher-order ambisonics and wave field synthesis.

Carrie Fucile is an intermedia artist focused on sound, installation, and performance. She has presented her work at numerous venues in the United States and abroad including The Walters Art Museum/Baltimore, The Red Room/Baltimore, the (e)merge Art Fair/Washington, DC, IA&A at Hillyer/Washington, DC, Vox Populi/Philadelphia, Casa Contemporânea/ São Paulo, Brazil, VMK – Gönczi Gallery/ Zalaegerszeg, Hungary, and the Director’s Lounge/Berlin, Germany. Her recordings are released through Ehse Records and Protagonist Music.

Kevin Blackistone‘s work conceptualizes the collection and handling of data, information and memory through the lenses of hierarchy and complexity in the domains of personal, social, scientific and political dynamics. In the piece titled “invalid corpus” piece he uses the invalid subset of the Mozilla Foundation’s open source collection of vocal recordings used to train their speech recognition ai to produce a crowded room effect of scattered thoughts with video accompaniment of the misidentified transcriptions of the recordings.
