Another stellar Saturday night at the Red Room, in which we mine the extensive sonic riches of the Lone Star State. Electric guitar and modular synthesis reveal surprising similarities in the hands of former Texans Sandy Ewen and Will Schorre (whom you may remember from High Zero 2013), two artists whose treatment of sound suggests a coherent (if obscure) internal logic while conceding nothing to musical tradition.
Doors at 8:30, show at 9
Sandy Ewen is an experimental guitarist, artist and architect who has recently relocated to NYC from Houston, TX. Her current projects include the trio Etched in the Eye, a duo with Tom Carter called Spiderwebs, the trio Garden medium, and ongoing collaborations with percussionist Weasel Walter and bassist Damon Smith. Sandy has spent much of 2017 touring, performing solo sets and in collaboration with Steve Jansen (tapes and electronics) and Maria Chavez (turntables) around Europe. In years past, Ewen has performed alongside Roscoe Mitchell, Keith Rowe, Lydia Lunch and many others, and has performed and recorded with Jaap Blonk, Henry Kaiser and more. In 2014 she performed at San Francisco’s 13th Annual Outsound New Music Summit, and she has made several appearances at Austin’s annual No Idea Festival. Her groups Garden medium, Spiderwebs, Etched in the Eye & Ewen/Smith/Walter all released albums in 2016. Ewen’s approach to playing is centered around found objects and extended guitar techniques.

Will Schorre (pronounced shor-ee) is an artist who is originally from Houston. He has performed on his own hand-built or invented instruments at the smallest venues in Texas and Maryland. Trained as a sculptor at MICA, his attention to the aesthetics of both sound and appearance could offer a fairly memorable listening experience. Due to a firework mishap at age 10 he can’t hear as well out of his right ear as he can the left one.
