Heart of the Ghost is an improvisational unit from the Baltimore/Washington area. Comprised of Jarrett Gilgore (Alto Saxophone), Luke Stewart (Double Bass) and Ian McColm (Drums), this group is the culmination of years of encircling orbits. Collectively encompassing a massive variety of interests and collaborators and themselves known players in the circles of improvised music, these three find common ground within their individual vocabularies: an aim to deconstruct and reshape canonized creative tropes into a new & stunning language.

Orginally from Long Island NY, Paul Giallorenzo is a Chicago-based improviser, composer, and producer using piano, synthesizer, keyboards, and electronics in a wide variety of groups and contexts, ranging from jazz and improvised music to electro-acoustic / noise to sound and video performance.   Performing throughout the midwest, eastern US, Canada, Europe, Brazil. Has appeared at the Chicago Jazz Festival, WNUR Chicago Sounds Jazzfest, Glad Cloud Festival of Ambient Music at the Whistler, and a 2008 artist residency in Luzern, Switzerland.

Susan Alcorn

One of the world’s premiere musical innovators on her instrument, Baltimore-based Susan Alcorn has taken the pedal steel guitar far beyond its traditional role in country and western swing music. Known among steel guitarists for her virtuosity and authenticity in a traditional context, Alcorn first paid her dues in Texas country & western bands.

Soon she began to expand the vocabulary of her instrument through her study of modern classical music (Messiaen, Varèse, Penderecki), the deep listening of Pauline Oliveros, Astor Piazzolla’s nuevo tango, free jazz, and world musics (Indian rags, South American songs, and gamelan orchestra). Her pieces reveal the complexity of her instrument and her musical experience while never straying from a very direct, intense, and personal musical expression.

The UK Guardian describes her music as “beautiful, glassy and liquid, however far she strays from pulse and conventional harmony.”

The Compositions is the name of an ever-changing group of inspiring and versatile musicians led by composer/percussionist Will Redman. This incarnation of the group features four new pieces written especially for Rose Burt on baritone sax, Shelly Purdy on vibraphone, Daniel Choynowski on bass, and the composer on drums. Loose approaches to rhythmically complex hypno-jazz.
