To anyone who has followed free jazz in the last ten years the name Sabir Mateen should be immediately recognizable as the distinctive NYC horn player who has blazed away with the likes of Daniel Carter, the undergound street performance band Test, and monster drummer Hammid Drake. Mateen's highly distinctive alto tone and authentic expressive intensity mark him as one of the most vital players in the new wave of free jazz.

His quartet contains a group of equally great musicians, including master trumpeter Raphe Malik (who frequently played with Cecil Taylor, Jimmy Lyons, and Glenn Spearman), Jane Wang (of Vattel Cherry's Bassrespanse), Raymond King on piano, and Ravish Momin (who performed at Red Room with Dan Decellis last year). This promises to be an extremely special night and particularly powerful grouping.
