Duet for Theremin and Lap Steel
The name of this Atlanta duo implies a proper classical recital, a rigid formality. But Scott Burland (theremin) and Frank Schultz (lap steel) don’t do scripted, improvising not so much distinct sounds as evolving eddies of sound, vapors of tones that develop and transform gracefully. Hypnotic pulses and dreamy drones weave together to form a kaleidoscope of sounds and moods, ambient clouds and swooning collages that are as much about texture as they are timbre, like a long-lost soundtrack to a deep-sea documentary.
Bill Brovold
Bill Brovold has been making experimental music since doing sound for performance artists in NYC in the early eighties. In 1983 He joined forces with Rhys Chatham (a relationship they maintain to this day). Performing in the Rhys Chatham ensemble for 5 years, he was also in the East Village Orchestra and the founder of the Zen Vikings, which was a nod to his first musical love, which was country and cowboy music. As both a solo artist and leader of the Detroit based Larval, he released music on the Knitting Factory, Tzadik and Cuneiform records among others. In recent years Brovold led the group Strange Farm which included long time music collaborators, Ernie (Modern Lovers, Billy Ficca (Television) and trombonist/composer Peter Zummo (Arthur Russel, Rhys Chatham, etc). Mainly a cross between improvisational and composed music.
He has recently completed an album of improvised duets based on Americana with composer/improviser Jamie Saft, which will be out later this year.
He spends his time living in the Hudson Valley of Upstate NY and teaching children music and instrument building in various public schools in Brooklyn where he has a room at Coney Island.
